Product Visualisation

For this Unit our task was to pick a house hold object model it in Maya and turn it
into a gadget, this is supposed to teach us about looking at details and improving
our observational skills which will help us when it comes to doing 2D drawings, I
chose to model an instrument which I will be able to turn into a gadget that is ableto protect its owner, It will be similar to a robot dog but the difference is that it willbe able to attack with weapons such a laser or gun.
I though about which instrument I would like to make and I decided to
pick a Ukulele which is a much smaller guitar with only 4 strings, I collected
reference images which shows the actual object and images of someone who
already modelled a ukulele in 3D before me. I want to model an Ukulele
because it seems like it doesn't have much detail but at the same time I fell
like this could be challenging for me to re create.
Design Idea
So I had this idea of a Ukulele to turn into a guardian, a small robot
who has the ability to detect
unexpected guests.
It has the ability to paralyse people
with electricity, owns a pair of two
laser eyes and a gun that will come
out from the side of his body and a
tail made out of a knife .
I also decided to give him long legs
so hes able to run fast and for long
amount of time. So in conclusion it
looks like a mechanical pet when in
reality its a dangerous
machine

The main reason why I picked this .
specific object is because I own a
Ukulele and realised its going to be
easy to model something I already
own, I took a couple of images of the
object from different angles, the
pictures show details such as how
the strings are attached and tided
up at the end or the curves of the
neck and the bodyof the instrument.
I also focuse onthe tuning keys and
the bridge because these two parts
connect
Modelling this object was quite challenging in terms of controlling
the overall shape and make sure that both sides are symmetrical,
I started off with a cube and added edge loops in order to subdivide
the shape, then I started playing around with edges by extruding and
resizing them. Firstly I modelled the body the neck and the head of
the instrument, I had small problems with making the body either too
thick or too thin, when I was finally happy with it I smoothed it out by
pressing 2 key. When I finally had the basic shape of the object I
started making it to look like a dangerous gadget by adding the things
that I designed earlier, I realised that there isn't enough time for me
to model a gun because that would require a lot of detail and texturing
so I simply copied and pasted the laser gun that I modelled earlier, I gave it legs, a tail and a head with small eyes.

the strings together and in order
for me to make this seem
realistic I wanted to look at the
smallest details.
You cannot always find the
pictures you need on the Internet that is why I believe that the
pictures that I took will be really helpful in this Unit.

Compositing
Compositing is a technique of
placing a 3D modelled object in a real life setting which makes
it look like the it was really
there ,to do this I had to create a UV map and find a HDRI
panorama image of high
quality or a PNG file in order for this to work, i found my pictureon www.HDRLabs.com . When i found the right picture i openedup Maya and created a sphere then i used image based lightingand applied the picture into a the shape, that feature is really
fascinating because it uses the colours from the picture that i
chose to create the right lighting and shadows. I then placed
the object in the place where i wanted it to be and rendered theimage.
